Lot 185
MIDDLE DANUBE. Uncertain tribe. Time of Augustus or slightly later, 27 BC-early 1st century AD. Denarius (Subaeratus, 18 mm, 4.06 g, 6 h), after 19 BC. Diademed and draped female bust (Feronia) to right, wearing pearl-necklace; behind, IT. Rev. Male figure (Parthian) kneeling to right, holding signum with vexillum in his right hand; around, imitative legend. Cf. BMC 14, Cohen 484 and RIC 288 (for prototype). A beautiful piece of wonderful Celtic style. Scratch on the obverse and a banker's mark on the reverse and with some breaks in plating, otherwise, very fine.

This beautiful piece imitates a denarius of Augustus that celebrates the retrieval of the legionary eagles that had been lost by Crassus and Antony in the disastrous campaigns against the Parthians in 53 and 36 BC.
